"Aziraphale helped himself to Crowley's slice of angel cake." - Good Omens

Angel cake in the UK is different from angel food cake (which originated in the US), and is featured in both the book and the television series. Neil Gaiman has mentioned either would be approved by Aziraphale and Crowley, along with deviled eggs.

How to Make Angel Cake

— Ingredients —

10 tbsp + 4 tbsp 145 g + 55 g butter
white sugar
3/4 cup 145 g white sugar
3 3 eggs
vanilla extract
1 tsp 5 ml vanilla extract
self-raising flour
2 cups 230 g self-raising flour
baking powder
1 tsp 5 g baking powder
2 tbsp + 1 splash 30ml + 5 ml milk
powdered sugar
1 cup 110 g powdered sugar
red and yellow food coloring
(as desired) (as desired) red and yellow food coloring

— Instructions —

  1. Make cake: Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F) and line three 8-inch by 4-inch tins with greaseproof paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the 10 tbsp (145 g) butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs, stirring each one in until combined before adding the next.
  4. Mix in the vanilla.
  5. Sift in the flour and baking powder and mix until you have a smooth batter.
  6. Mix in 2 tbsp milk until combined.
  7. Evenly separate the batter into 3 bowls. Leave one as is and add a small amount of yellow and pink food colouring to the others, adding until you have your desired hue.
  8. Spread the batter into the prepared cake tins, still separating by color.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven until golden (about 20-25 minutes).
  10. Allow to cool slightly in the tin before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Make icing: Mix the 4 tbsp (55g) butter, powdered sugar and 1 splash milk in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  12. Finish cake: Trim the edges of the cake and the top of the yellow and pink layers, slicing off any domed portion.
  13. From top to bottom, the colors should be yellow, white, pink (if you're going by the TV series cake - but really, any order is fine). Spread buttercream between the yellow and white layers, as well as between the white and pink layers.
  14. Cut into 1-inch slices to serve, and share with someone who needs you.
