"I love cheesy poofs. You love cheesy poofs. If we didn't eat cheesy poofs, we'd be laaaame." - Cartman

Cheesy poofs are most likely based on Cheetos Puffs, a snack by Frito Lay. If you're looking for a homemade alternative, I've included a recipe for gougères - the fanciest of cheesy poofs. Gougères are light, easy, and have a delightful hollow center.

How to Make Fancy Cheesy Poofs (Gougères)

— Ingredients —

water
1 cup water
butter
5 tbsp butter
salt
1 tsp salt
pepper
1 tsp pepper
nutmeg
1 tsp nutmeg
flour
1 cup flour
Gruyère cheese
1 cup Gruyère cheese

— Instructions —

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (218 degrees C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup water, butter, salt, pepper and nutmeg.
  3. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. When butter melts, reduce the heat to low and add the flour.
  4. While stirring, cook until mixture begins to pull away from the side of the pan (about 1 minute).
  5. Remove from heat.
  6. Stir in cheese until well incorporated.
  7. Mix in the eggs one at a time, and stir until the batter is smooth and firm.
  8. Drop mixture in rounded spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet.
  9. Bake until the cheesy poofs have doubled in size and are golden brown in color (about 18-20 minutes).
  10. Serve warm or cold as a light appetizer or side dish.
