Bannock does not contain cholesterol, and is the perfect bread to bake outside. Make the dough and wrap it around a stick to roast slowly over the fire. Alternatively, fry in an oiled cast iron frying pan.

How to Make Bannock Bread

— Ingredients —

flour
3 cups 384 g flour
baking powder
2 tbsp 28.7 g baking powder
vegetable oil
1/4 cup 60 ml vegetable oil
water
1 1/2 cups 355 ml water
salt
1 pinch 0.36 g salt

— Instructions —

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together.
  3. On a floured surface, knead the dough until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes).
  4. Allow the dough to rest (about 30 seconds).
  5. Place the dough on a pan or cookie sheet.
  6. Using a rolling pin, smoothly roll the dough thin on the sheet (to a thickness of about one inch).
  7. Using a fork, dock the dough by randomly pricking holes all over it.
  8. Bake until the bottom crust has a toasty golden color (about 15 to 20 minutes).
  9. Break or slice into pieces, and serve hot with butter or jam.
