Recipe

Making the Pie Dough

You will need:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3-6 tablespoons cold water

Instructions:

  1. Cream butter and sugar.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix flour and salt.
  3. Gradually add this mixture to the butter and sugar.
  4. Add water until the entire mixture becomes doughy. Do not overhandle.
  5. Split dough into two equal-sized balls. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

Making the Pie

You will need:

  • Pie dough (above)
  • Butter sauce (below)
  • 4-8 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  2. Roll out dough. Place bottom crust in pan.
  3. Peel, core, and slice apples.
  4. Place apple slices in a large bowl. Toss with spices and lemon juice.
  5. Mound the apples in the crust.
  6. Make and pour butter sauce (below) evenly over the apples.
  7. Top with another crust layer. Cut slits in the top.
  8. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and continue baking until pie is done (about 40 minutes).

Making the Butter Sauce

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions:

  1. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer (about 5 minutes).
  2. Use immediately. Store additional sauce in the refrigerator. The sauce will solidify, but you can heat it up very slightly (only a few seconds in the microwave) and drizzle over ice cream to accompany the pie.
